Ultralow-density nanocage-based metal-oxide polymorphs.
For two important metal oxides (MO, M=Mg, Zn) we predict, via accurate electronic structure calculations, that new low-density nanoporous crystalline phases may be accessible via the coalescence of nanocluster building blocks. Specifically, we consider the assembly of cagelike (MO)_{12} clusters exhibiting particularly high gas phase stability, leading to new polymorphs with energetic stabiliti...
متن کاملClathrate ice sL: a new crystalline phase of ice with ultralow density predicted by first-principles phase diagram computations.
In contrast to the rich knowledge of water and 17 experimentally confirmed crystalline phases of solid water under positive pressures, water under negative pressure has been poorly explored. In this study, a new crystalline phase of ice with ultralow density (0.6 g cm-3), named "clathrate ice sL", is constructed by nano water cage clusters, and it is predicted to be stable under a lower negativ...
متن کاملAn unusual density evolution between SrCdB2O5 polymorphs.
Owing to the effect of atomic vibrations, a high-temperature phase usually features a relatively smaller density when compared with a low-temperature phase. In this work, a new SrCdB2O5 phase has been discovered. According to the crystallization temperature from low to high, the new SrCdB2O5 phase can be regarded as the high-temperature β-SrCdB2O5 phase. The density of β-SrCdB2O5 is obviously l...
متن کاملImaging molecular crystal polymorphs and their polycrystalline microstructures in situ by ultralow-frequency Raman spectroscopy.
Ultralow-frequency Raman spectroscopy that can measure vibrational bands at as low as ±10 cm(-1) has enabled facile in situ imaging of polycrystalline microstructures such as grains and grain boundaries with high polymorph specificity. We demonstrate this method by investigating microcrystals of two distinct polymorphs of 1,1'-binaphthyl using a microscope.
متن کاملHigh density amorphous ice from cubic ice.
Supercooled water does not behave like a simple liquid, but instead shows a number of anomalous properties. These include the diffusion coefficient [2] or the kinematic viscosity [3] which show anomalous pressure dependencies on compression up to 200MPa, whereas beyond 200 MPa the expected behaviour is observed. To explain these anomalies the second critical point hypothesis has been put forwar...
